Minnesota Cheese Tray Collection

Mr. R&R loves cheese. I call him my little mouse. Every night before bed, he quietly sneaks into the fridge and grabs string cheese, or a slice of provolone, or maybe his favorite Tillamook (but only if I’ve already cut it up).  Maybe his cheese addiction has something to do with being raised in Minnesota where every party includes a meat (summer sausage, not deli meat) and cheese tray. Our new cheese tray collection is homage to his Minnesota roots.

I consider myself to be an insightful, perceptive Mrs. because I look at the rough, uncut black walnut in our garage and I say “that would make a great cheese tray.”

Mr. R&R spent the weekend running boards through the planer, and then the joiner,  and sometimes the table saw to create four long and narrow cheese trays (the pieces with live edges are my favorite).

He lovingly applied butcher block oil and finish, watched the Stanley Cup playoffs while it dried, hand sanded the boards, and repeated the process two more times.

The finished cheese trays retain the character of the black walnut, yet are refined enough to use for a wine and cheese party or rustic enough for a Minnesota meat and cheese tray. Who is ready for a party at my house?
